Customer background

NXT Mobility was established four years ago as the dedicated sustainable mobility spin-off of GP Groot, a prominent player with a long history in fuel stations and the wholesale of fuel, gases, and lubricants, and was created to focus solely on renewable initiatives. The company is dedicated to developing a network of multi-fuel Energy Hubs, establishing a public network of fast chargers, and delivering hardware and services to transportation companies and installers.

What started as a small internal project has rapidly evolved into a major regional network. NXT Mobility currently operates over 40 fast-charging locations and has secured a pipeline to deploy an additional 200+ chargers by 2030, aiming to become a dominant force in the Dutch energy transition.

Executive summary

NXT Mobility needed a CPO and MSP platform that could handle complex tender requirements and scale alongside its ambitious growth from a local pilot to a major regional player. By partnering with Road (formerly E-Flux), it gained a flexible white-label solution that allowed it to win the prestigious MRA-E tender. Today, it manages multiple business entities and complex pricing structures on a single, stable backbone.

"We started with one pole and one charge card with Road, and we have grown together. We prefer their startup mentality and flexibility over the rigid ego of established players."

The challenge: a rigid market and complex tender requirements

Before its massive expansion, NXT Mobility (then operating under GP Groot) evaluated the market to professionalize its EV charging offerings. It faced two distinct challenges:

  • Rigidity in the market: it explored established providers in the industry, where offerings were limited to "off-the-shelf" products with little room for custom development.
  • Complex tender requirements: when entering the bid for the MRA-E tender (covering North Holland, Flevoland, and Utrecht), it faced a technical hurdle. The tender required a complex pricing structure: APEX pricing (variable tariffs) for specific users, combined with fixed per-kWh pricing for standard users, all determined automatically by the charge card used. Without a partner willing to build this custom logic, NXT Mobility risked losing the tender and halting its expansion.

The Solution: a flexible partner with a startup mentality

NXT Mobility has been a partner for seven years, choosing Road (then E-Flux) when the company was just a three-person team in an attic. Despite re-evaluating the market during the formation of their joint venture "NXT 50five," they chose to stay and expand with Road.

Why Road?

  • Culture fit: Boyd Schooneman emphasized that Road’s "startup mentality" was the deciding factor. Unlike the rigid approach of competitors, Road offered genuine partnership and a willingness to think along with the client.
  • Flexibility: Road was the only partner willing to develop the custom features required.
  • Cost efficiency: competitive pricing compared to legacy providers.

How Road solved the problem

Road provided a dual-layered solution to accommodate NXT Mobility’s complex corporate structure:

  • Custom development for tenders: Road’s development team built the specific hybrid pricing logic required for the MRA-E tender. This feature allows the station to recognize the charge card and instantly toggle between dynamic APEX pricing and fixed contract pricing.
  • Dual white label platforms: to keep administrative lines clear, Road deployed two distinct White Label platforms: platform A (NXT 50five): dedicated to the CPO/MSP activities of their Joint Venture and platform B (NXT Charging Solutions): dedicated to their hardware sales and service branch.

Results

The partnership has allowed NXT Mobility to transition from a traditional fuel trader to a leader in the EV space.

  • Tender success: the custom development helped NXT Mobility (via NXT 50five) win the MRA-E tender, allowing them to realize chargers on municipal grounds across three provinces.
  • Network growth: they have successfully scaled from 1 pilot charger to 40+ operational fast-charging locations, with a secured pipeline of 100+ locations currently awaiting grid connections..
  • Operational peace of mind: for NXT Mobility, "no news is good news." The platform manages high volumes of transactions with minimal administrative errors, allowing the team to focus on infrastructure rather than troubleshooting billing.

"For the Joint Venture, we needed a mix of APEX pricing and fixed pricing depending on the card used. Road developed that specifically for us. That flexibility is something we didn’t find elsewhere."

Looking ahead: battery-buffered charging and data-driven maintenance

As the network grows toward 250 locations, reliance on manual processes (Excel sheets) for maintenance is becoming unsustainable.

  • Ticketing & maintenance: the next phase of the partnership will focus on integrating a robust ticketing system and operations dashboard. This will move NXT Mobility away from spreadsheet management, giving them real-time grip on technical uptime, error tracking, and resolution times.
  • Battery-buffered charging: NXT is deploying battery-integrated fast chargers (300kW output on standard 3x80A connections) to bypass grid congestion. Road will continue to support the software side of these high-tech deployments.

Ready to scale your charging network with a partner that builds with you, not just for you?

"We need to move from Excel to a fully integrated operations dashboard. We want to track errors, manage tickets, and monitor financial performance in one place. That is the next step with Road."
