Customer background

JAJO (formerly Janssen de Jong Groep) is one of the top 15 players in the construction sector and is active in the Netherlands, Poland and the Caribbean. With 35 construction-related subsidiaries, the group focuses on development, construction, maintenance, repair and the harvesting of materials.

Their portfolio includes some of the most iconic monuments in the Netherlands, such as the restoration of Paleis Het Loo, the award-winning renovation of Leiden City Hall and the ongoing renovation of the Binnenhof in The Hague.

Sustainability is central to their business operations; JAJO employs approximately 700 people in the Netherlands (and 500 in the Caribbean) and maintains a strict mobility policy where all lease cars are 100% electric.

Executive summary:

When JAJO's previous provider, EV-Box, announced that it would stop certain back-office services, it posed a critical operational risk to their electric fleet. Instead of waiting, JAJO acted proactively. Together with installation partner LaadpuntNL, they chose Road. Thanks to Road's unique ability to migrate existing hardware remotely, JAJO avoided a massive capital expenditure by bypassing the need for a full-scale hardware replacement. The result was a seamless transition and, thanks to the Enterprise account, a centralized overview of all Dutch subsidiaries for the first time.

The challenge: a threat to mobility

Since September 2023, JAJO has maintained a policy where only new electric lease cars are allowed. This ambitious policy is completely dependent on a functioning charging infrastructure, both at the office and at employees' homes (approximately 100 locations). When the news came that EV-Box would stop back-office support, JAJO faced a major challenge. Without properly functioning charging stations and back-office, employees cannot claim or be reimbursed for energy costs, which effectively brings the fleet to a standstill. Waiting until the deadline of December 1, 2025 was not an option; JAJO sought a stable, future-proof partner that could handle the complex structure of their organization.

"We have had the policy of exclusively leasing electric cars since September 2023. If you are then suddenly faced with the problem that the charging stations no longer work... then you are facing a major challenge."

The solution: why JAJO chose Road:

Together with their regular installer LaadpuntNL, JAJO assessed three parties. Road emerged as the winner thanks to three decisive factors:

1. Migration instead of replacement (cost efficiency)

While initial assessments suggested replacing the entire hardware infrastructure, Road offered a solution to migrate the existing charging stations to the Road platform remotely. By opting for migration over replacement, JAJO successfully avoided significant capital costs, saving several times more per charger compared to the expense of purchasing and installing new equipment.

"What we ran into with you, in a positive sense was that many existing chargers just needed to be migrated [reconfigured]. There were other parties who said: 'No, you need new chargers everywhere.' We looked very closely at the cost picture... and that was decisive for us."

2. Business management for 15 Dutch brands

With dozens of BVs (business entities), administration was complex. Road provided an Enterprise account with which JAJO could manage all charging stations in the Netherlands, both at the office and at employees' homes, in one system, segmented by entity. This significantly simplified management for Nicole Gevers, Fleet Manager at JAJO.

"We now have an Enterprise account so that we have everything in one system... a complete overview with all charging stations in it. That makes management much easier."

3. Stability and trust

After the experience with the previous supplier, JAJO sought certainty. Road's stable business structure, transparency and Road's strong relationship with LaadpuntNL were decisive factors in choosing Road as a long-term partner.

How Road solved the problem:

Road worked closely with LaadpuntNL to execute a phased migration:

  • Phase 1 (The 'silent' migration): the vast majority of charging points, across both employee residences and office locations were migrated remotely to Road's back-end well before the deadline. This ensured there was no downtime.
  • Phase 2 (targeted replacement): a small percentage of outdated chargers (8 years or older, various brands) that could not technically be migrated were replaced by LaadpuntNL with new Peblar chargers, which were directly connected to the Road network.

Results:

The collaboration guaranteed the continuity of JAJO's activities without hindering employees.

  • Operational peace of mind: according to Nicole, the migration went "smoothly" and "silently". In fleet management, no news is good news. Employees could continue to charge their lease cars without interruption.
  • Centralized insight: Nicole now has real-time insight into all more than 250 vehicles and charging points of all BVs, reducing administrative burdens.
  • Cost avoidance: by choosing Road's hardware-independent platform, JAJO avoided a substantial capital investment that would otherwise have been spent on a complete hardware overhaul.
  • Efficient onboarding: new employees now immediately receive a Peblar charger with a Road account, standardizing the process.

"For us, the project is a success if we receive few complaints from colleagues. The fewer calls we get... the better it actually is. The process went almost silently - and that means it was successful."

Looking ahead: electrifying the 'grey license plate':

Now that passenger cars (yellow license plate) are almost fully electric, JAJO and Road are focusing on the next step: commercial vehicles (grey license plate). Furthermore, JAJO is working to leverage the centralized data in the Road dashboard to automatically populate their "smarttrackers." This will further reduce manual work for administrative employees by automatically extracting charging data per business entity.

"We looked at each other and said: we have to switch now. This is too uncertain... the result was that the first charging stations were migrated back in June. This allowed us to go through the whole process calmly."
